Magnificat - Your Life is Everlasting

THE TEXT OF THE AVE VERUM CORPUS is a 14 th -century hymn attributed to Pope Innocent VI. It was sung during the Mass, at the elevation of the host, after the consecration. Beginning in the Renaissance, many great composers set it to music. In 1791, knowing he was dying, Mozart was with his wife, who was expecting their sixth child. He composed this mar- velous music as he was reflecting on the holy Viaticum (the communion of the dying) he would soon receive, and which constitutes, as stated in the last verse, a foretaste of the glorious Body of Christ we will rejoin the moment we cross the threshold of death.
