228 Rites for Particular Circumstances Rite of Election or Enrollment of Names (Optional) 277. The optional liturgical rite called both “Election” and “Enrollment of Names” may be celebrated with children of catechetical age, especially those whose catechumenate has extended over a long period of time. This celebration, which usually coincides with the beginning of Lent, marks the beginning of the period of final preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation, during which the children will be encouraged to follow Christ with greater generosity. 278. In the Rite of Election, on the basis of the testimony of parents, godparents and catechists, and of the children’s reaffirmation of their intention, the Church judges their state of readiness and decides on their advancement toward the Sacraments of Initiation. Thus the Church makes her “Election,” that is, the choice and admission of those children who have the dispositions that make them fit to take part, at the next major celebration, in the Sacraments of Initiation. 279. The Rite should take place in the cathedral church, in a parish church or, if necessary, in some other suitable and fitting place. If the Election of children of catechetical age is to take place within a celebration in which older catechumens are also to receive the Church’s Election, the rite for adults (nos. 129-137) should be used, with appropriate adaptation of the texts to be made by the celebrant. 280. It should be celebrated within the Mass of the First Sunday of Lent, after the Homily. If the Rite happens to be celebrated on another day, it begins with the Liturgy of the Word. In this case, if the readings for the day are not suitable, they should be chosen from those assigned to the First Sunday of Lent (cf. Lectionary for Mass, nos. 22-24), or other suitable texts. The proper Ritual Mass for the Election or Enrollment of Names may be celebrated with the color violet on any day except those listed in nos. 1-4 of the Table of Liturgical Days. The Mass of the Friday of the Fourth Week of Lent may also be used. If, however, the Eucharist is not celebrated, the Rite is concluded with the Dismissal of both the elect and the faithful. USA
