38 The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults 2) Where pagan cults flourish and are common, to insert into the Rite for Entrance into the Catechumenate, a first Exorcism and a first Renunciation (cf. nos. 69-72). In the United States, the Diocesan Bishop has this discretion. 3) To decide that the gesture of signing the forehead be made in front of the forehead, in places where touching is thought improper (nos. 54-55). In the United States, the Diocesan Bishop has this discretion. 4) Where a new name is given at once to the initiate in the practice of non-Christian religions, to decide that individuals be given their new name during the Rite for Entrance into the Catechumenate (no. 73). In the United States, the norm is that no new name is to be given, though the Diocesan Bishop has discretion to permit it for catechumens from cultures where it is the practice. 5) In accordance with local customs, to incorporate into the same Order, no. 74, auxiliary rites to signify reception into the community. In the United States, an optional presentation of a Cross has been included, and the Diocesan Bishop has discretion to include additional rites. 6) In the Period of the Catechumenate, besides the customary rites (nos. 81-97 and 106-117), to establish “rites of passage,” such as anticipated celebrations of the “Rites of Handing On” (nos. 157163, 178-184), the “Ephphatha” Rite, the Recitation of the Creed, or even the Anointing with the Oil of Catechumens (nos. 98-103). In the United States, the Anointing is permitted in the Period of the Catechumenate, and in appropriate circumstances, the other celebrations mentioned may also be anticipated. 7) To decide that the Anointing with the Oil of Catechumens be omitted, or transferred to take place among the Rites of Immediate Preparation, or used within the Period of the Catechumenate as a kind of “rite of passage” (nos. 98-103). In the United States, the Anointing is permitted only in the Periods of the Catechumenate and of Purification and Enlightenment, and is thus to be omitted both in the Rites of Immediate Preparation and at the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation.
