112 nd Week in Ordinary Time The Wedding Feast at Cana We place ourselves in the presence of the Lord: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God blesses the joy of his people. This week, the Gospel tells us about Jesus’ first miracle, performed during a wedding, after a confident request from the Virgin Mary. Jesus shows everyone who observes him that he is the Son of God. At Cana, Jesus gives a first sign of his power... a sign of God’s love for us. There was a wedding in Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from…, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when the people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” (Jn 2:1-3, 5, 7a-9, 10). This first miracle is a gesture of love. It is a sign of God’s covenant with mankind, which is a love story, similar to a marriage. God wants his people to be joyful! Making sure that the wine does not run out means making sure that the wedding goes well, that the guests are happy, that the love of this young couple can be truly celebrated! Jesus came into the world to give happiness abundantly. God does wonders for us! Let’s also notice that he doesn’t perform this miracle alone (although he could, of course). Rather, he involves the servants who listen to him, and of the Virgin Mary, who is attentive to the need of the hosts. Even today, he asks us to listen to him and to be instruments of his love.
